MOI Initiative: The Breakthrough Excellence Awards – Recognizing Achievement Across All Backgrounds

Created by: Shawn Ferreira MA
Open
Problem

For decades, professional awards have been segmented by race or identity, such as Black Engineer of the Year or Hispanic Scientist of the Year. While these awards sought to highlight underrepresented talent, they often reinforced separation rather than fostering true inclusion.

At the same time, many mainstream merit-based awards have failed to acknowledge individuals who have overcome significant barriers—not just racial, but economic, geographic, and social.

We need a better way to ensure that achievement across all backgrounds is recognized fairly, equitably, and transparently—without falling into identity-based selection.

These awards will set a new standard for professional recognition—one that truly acknowledges success across all backgrounds while keeping selection fair and merit-based, ensuring those who have historically been overlooked are included.

Solution

These awards replace existing identity-based honors with a merit-driven system that recognizes professionals based on achievement, leadership, and innovation while still ensuring that historically overlooked achievers receive fair recognition.

Unlike past awards that focused on race, these will be open to all while ensuring that individuals from diverse life experiences and backgrounds receive fair recognition for their accomplishments.
